Caliz Maldonado was driving home Wednesday night when he noticed an unusual dark shadow in the middle of the highway.

 

“I was driving over the Braga Bridge and I saw this black strip in the road,” Maldonado recalled. “I didn’t know what it was, to be honest. I was confused.”

 

Maldonado drove over the black strip on I-195 West, not realizing that Massachusetts State Police troopers had deployed stop sticks in an attempt to put an end to a lengthy pursuit.

 

“My car started making a lot of noise,” Maldonado said. “It started going ‘beep, beep, beep, beep.'”

 

Maldonado realized what had happened within minutes of pulling over into the breakdown lane.

 

“I saw a car that was being chased by four different state troopers,” he explained, noting that he watched the pursuit speed past him on the highway. “[The driver] was like swerving back and forth, trying to not let them get in front of him.”
