Crews are still on scene battling a 3-alarm fire that broke out late Wednesday night in Fall River.

 

Firefighters responding to a building in the area of Rodman and South Main Streets around 10 p.m. found flames and smoke pouring out of it.

 

Fall River District Fire Chief Sean Flannery said the flames broke through the windows of a storefront and they immediately set up a defensive attack.

 

“There were three buildings involved here,” Flannery explained. “The main fire building had a building to the north that sustained heavy fire damage and there was another building on Rodman Street that had an apartment in it where one tenant was displaced.”

 

That tenant was in their apartment at the time of the fire but was able to get out uninjured.

 

Two businesses are also in the building on the north side of the main fire building. Those two buildings are “structurally unsound,” according to Flannery, and the building department will be making an assessment later in the day.

 

One firefighter was hurt by some falling glass, but was treated on scene and continued battling the fire.

 

“It’s been challenging. There’s been some hot spots that we’re having difficulty getting to,” Flannery said. “Right now we have two ladder trucks deployed trying to get to that hot spot, so we are going to be here for a while.”

 

Drivers are urged to avoid the area since it is expected to be shut down for a majority of the morning.

 

The cause remains under investigation.
