A UMass Dartmouth student accused in the deadly stabbing of a student-athlete outside a Providence club has been ordered held without bail.

 

Chukwunonso David Uzoma-Eze, 19, allegedly stabbed two players on the UMass Dartmouth football team outside Mezzo Lounge off Charles Street early on Sept. 19.

 

As a result, 18-year-old freshman Marvins Antoine, of Fall River, died at the hospital

 

The Providence Board of Licenses has ordered the nightclub to remain closed for a month.

 

Uzoma-Eze, who police said also attends UMass Dartmouth, was arraigned Monday on a murder charge in Providence District Court. His attorney, Noah Kilroy, told 12 News he will be claiming self-defense in the case.

 

“Other than that, I don’t want to comment out of respect for the family,” Kilroy said. “Give them some time to grieve.”

 

Uzoma-Eze was arraigned in New Bedford District Court Sept. 21, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement lodged a detainer request against him on Sept. 22.

 

An ICE spokesperson told 12 News Uzoma-Eze initially entered the country legally in 2015, but is now considered a “criminal illegal alien from Nigeria” for violating the terms of lawful admission after his murder arrest.

 

Kilroy declined to comment on the immigration matter.
